China House in George Town

I was about to give them half of that one star but that wasn't an option. We came all the way from KL to gather and wanted to eat together at this place because people say it’s nice. Our experience was a disappointment. We waited for more than an hour just to be seated two rooms away. When requested to be seated together, one of the workers forced us to order LUNCH first so that they could secure our bills which is dumb. NOT RECOMMEND. OVERRATED. The food is on its way but I just couldn’t wait to write this review.

A good place for a group of friends or with family members to spend a quality time together, with piece a cake and a cuppa of coffee and tea. But no recommend to order savoury or main dishes.

Beautiful interior. There’s a ton of seats so even though it’s super busy, you’ll be able to find a seat. I had the mango banana smoothie which was ok but not amazing. I also had the banana cake and the chocolate raspberry cake. Both of the cakes were amazing but the chocolate raspberry one was definitely one of the best cakes I’ve ever had. Highly recommend this place for a nice afternoon drinks and cake session!

Still a good place to hang out. I have been coming here since high school. There are more competition available in the past few years however none has the space like China House.

VERY GOOD cakes and food. Great place to escape the heat while searching for street art. Lots of different rooms and vibes to experience.

The atmosphere and ambience of this historic building-turned-restaurant is enough of a draw to dine here, and the food takes it to a whole new level. Absolutely delicious innovative dishes (try the duck egg pesto sandwich—incredible!), good coffee , amazing space with coloring for kids (and adults!). Artsy, creative, super hip—would be competitive in any city around the world. MUST DO in penang! (Also it’s close to the Chew Jetty and interspersed with downtown Georgetown street art).

If you are tired hunting street murals and looking place to rest, this place is the best option. Whether you want to have quick rest enjoying snacks or go for the meals. When we visited this place, we tried the cakes and they were amazing. The waitresses were polite and well informed about the selection if the cookies there. The place divided into two parts, the front part is like cafe and the back part is like reading room. Also there is small art gallery in the second floor.

Chill place that’s suitable for kids due to artistic nature (ur table cloth is a drawing board)- also plenty of board games. Tried the salted caramel cheesecake. Tasty!! The sweet/salty tastes really complement each other. I’ve also tried the more nutty cakes previously such as the tiramisu and the nuts they have in there is such high quality and tasty! It’s expensive tho- ~rm20/slice. Do come if you’re a fan of cakes and desserts!

Food quality is good as always and crowd is a lot as usual. Food service is very slow although I only ordered cakes. Overall still a pleasant visit.

Good selection of desserts and tasty food. Mexican breakfast (Nachos style) was amazing and came in a huge potion. Sangria wasn’t too authentic but still a refreshing drink. Lovely ambience with a retro vibe, and good service.

Great cafe for a slice of cake or to catch up with friends. The variety of cakes is too much to choose. We ordered the death by chocolate and the earl grey chocolate cake. The death one taste better for me. Waiters are helpful and polite. There's a parking lot located a few shops away. So it is not that troublesome to look for a proper parking slot. Might come back to try their lunch/dinner next time.

Food was good. Service was great (from only one girl though) Omg what was her name again, she was fabulous. The pretty Indian looking girl with those delightful smiles. The other one seemed like she's having a bad day and the last thing she wanted was to work. THE CAKES WERE ALSO AMAZING. You could walk through the whole building to the other side. It's quite well decorated. Good place for both lunch or dinner. GREAT PLACE FOR DESSERT!!

Although there are a variety of cakes to choose from, the taste of the cakes are very decent. Not worth the price.

Bring your children along for some doodles and scrambles on the table's fresh mahjong paper with crayons. Insta-worthy environment, old books to bring home for free (but do return them on your next visit), cakes that are inches thick 👀, great coffee and food but slightly pricey, get yourself something artsy crafty from their crafts gallery.

Only good for cakes. Ambience I give a 3 ⭐️. Service is awful - servers were not helpful and didn’t listen at all. Oh, and they charge for ice!

Really high class restaurant. Prices higher than on street buy it's obvious. Great tasty food and enormous choice of all kind sweetness. A lot of people inside but service is very good and staff really nice.

Pretty cafe with yummy cakes and drinks. It would have been a nicer experience if the waiting staff could patiently explain the different types of cakes (there were dozens of choices!) rather than just asking if people are ready to order as this makes people feel hurried. Toilets could have been cleaner.

Very limited menu, so not good if you are looking for a variety. Cake flavours are also limited compared to before. So call beforehand to ensure the cake you want is available! Opens till midnight daily.

Very nice cake and environment. The historical building is preserved quite well...should experience it yourself. Can wonder around to take some good photos.Quite pricey😅but good experience.

Love the Coffee Latte and red velvet cake (but the portion is too big)

Our favourite hangout when we need a slice or two of cakes. This time we had the flourless orange almond cake, the chocolate brownie and an iced chocolate drink. Both cakes hit the mark for us. The orange flourless one was tasty and not overly sweet. The chocolate one was moist. The drink? The chocolatey taste was maintained by keeping the sweetness at bay. All for less than 50 ringgit. And to celebrate my turning 50 too. May you live long and prosper, China House.

I ordered for strawberry milkshake here and its not actually promising. It’s not even taste as like one. When my friend asked for some ice cubes to one staff she seems angry saying ‘is that all?’. I like the ambiance though but it could have been better if staff are also nice and friendly. For me, they should improve their drinks especially the one I ordered, the glass they used though is simply ordinary plastic as if like its telling me ‘don’t order me anymore’, the milkshake tastes bad for me and its not worth the price, I can even buy one outside that taste good. The cakes they offer looks great, although I haven’t tried, I trust my friend’s taste bud as we both bake bread and cakes.

China House reigns as a supreme George Town destination to bring visitors, see a band, or grab dessert. Always a fun hangout in the evenings and for brunch or coffee early in the day. Not all of their dozens of dessert choices is a winner every time, but if you're planning to share with others, you double your chances at sweet, sticky success.

This place is the coolest. The space and vibe is hip and really for anyone who is creative. We originally came in the morning for breakfast but changed our mind to the afternoon for cake. It really has the best and most selections of cakes I've ever seen. Keep in mind this place is extremely busy and is popular with the locals and tourists. We felt like big kids coloring on tables and eating cake at the table. I would def recommend and come back!

Very nice place to have lunch/dinner! Cosy. Very friendly people. Good selection of food, varying from Asian, Italian, Vegetarian and even hot dogs and hamburgers. The range of cakes for dessert is also very wide. Worth a visit when in Georgetown, especially since the street art is so close by! Will come again!

First of all, maybe all-in-one place you can make your tummy full. From the menu, you can order drinks ranging from soft drinks, tea and coffee to beer and liquor. Didn’t snap the menu but they serve sandwiches, pasta and spaghetti also heavy foods, but do order their cakes or pastries because the taste is superb. Might need some sugarless tea or coffee to neutral the sweetness, but suits you that have sweet tooth. The place is nice as they maintains the old building and some antique furnitures, with some modern accents added. You can play board games with friends or just have a paper (can ask for it) and sketch anything you want while having your food. If you come by car, the parkings are limited so you might have to park at parking area(costs) nearby. Overall, it was a good experience here and I enjoyed the food and drink.

ChinaHouse was SO good that we went for breakfast and dinner in the same day. The restaurant itself is very hip, or as some would call, hipster. The food is fresh, flavourful, and surprising. Highly recommend the avocado salad. The desserts were delicious, too, but I would come back over and over again for that avocado salad.

Crowded. Service slow. Cake was so so. The calamansi drink.. Not sure what it was also. But it has a cool vibe. Not sure if I'll recommend it again.

The poppyseed lemon cake (12) was AMAZING! So was the Salted Caramel Chocolate cake (22). Wow!! Neat place with each room set up differently. Feels like you are walking through different cafes all in one place. Loved it! Fun live music at the back also.

a place for indulging cakes and desserts. The place have few menu but awesomely tasty and delicious. A place in the middle of george town so it is a bit hard to find parking.

Food here was disappointing. Steak was very small for its price. The steak was half medium half well-done. "Japanese fried chicken" was bad. The chicken pieces were flaky and slightly burnt. (Old oil smell). But to top it off, the service was bad. Very rigid and unfriendly. Only saving grace were two of the staff who were very understanding.

Tried the recommended tiramisu and salted caramel chocolate cake was our choice. Both cakes were good but iced mocha was disappointing.

I would give 4* for the cakes selection (lots of choices & i picked the Moroccan flourless cakes.. tasty). I gave 3* cuz i find the drinks we had quite pricey against a pretty basic decor (the back area looks better than the first half of the cafe) and the fact they ran out of the Japanese fried chicken at around 2pm-ish bearing in mind this is a popular cafe so one would have thought ample stock should have been prepared.

Always come here whenever I’m craving for a good tiramisu cake. Love the whole environment & vibe. Just that some of the display and decor gets a little dusty and can be a little off putting 😅

Interesting experience at China House. Love the interior design- it's huge and comforting with lots of traditional forms of entertainment in there. It is a good place for family and friends to connect and create something meaningful. The options for cakes are plenty; they are huge in serving, and they tastes amazing. This is a unique and diverse place.

The cake Tiramisu really finger licking good. Taste so yummy and delicious. Would definitely drop by to have one again and again.
